Speaking with 7News on Wednesday, Jennifer Thompson said the German shepherd puppy was abandoned and tied to a fence outside her home with a 3-inch leash. “The dog was out there for about 16 hours before we even found it,” she said. “I’ve been gone for a few days. What if I stayed for a week? She would have been dead.”Thompson’s home surveillance cameras were rolling when a white pickup truck drove by along the 16000 block of Southwest 256th Street, just after 6 p.m., Tuesday. The driver appeared to look up the driveway. The truck then came back, stopped, and a man in a blue shirt popped the tailgate. He led the pup off the truck bed and took off. Before great white sharks migrate north to Cape Cod for the summer and fall, shark researchers are trying to figure out where and when the apex predators mate.Right now in early April, many of the East Coast great whites are off the North Carolina coast, and scientists from the nonprofit OCEARCH will be heading to the region soon to collect data from sharks. The researchers hope to sample mature white sharks to solve the most elusive piece of the Western North Atlantic white shark puzzle: when and where they breed.“Our comprehensive studies of the white shark, the ocean’s top predator, are in their final stages in the Western North Atlantic, and now we turn our attention to a gap that still remains,” said OCEARCH Chief Scientist Bob Hueter. “This is the great migration of sharks from their overwintering grounds off the southeast U.S. towards their summer feeding areas, as increasing spring temperatures and light levels signal to the sharks that it’s time...

NEW YORK — Twitter has labeled National Public Radio as “state-affiliated media” on the social media site, a move some worried Wednesday could undermine public confidence in the news organization.NPR said it was disturbed to see the description added to all of the tweets that it sends out, with John Lansing, its president and CEO, calling it “unacceptable for Twitter to label us this way.”It was unclear why Twitter made the move. Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk, quoted a definition of state-affiliated media in the company’s guidelines as “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.”“Seems accurate,” Musk tweeted in a reply to NPR.NPR does receive U.S. government funding through grants from federal agencies and departments, along with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
