San Jose Sharks’ third-period lead disappears before sparse SAP Center crowd

SAN JOSE – Like a game of whack-a-mole, as soon as the San Jose Sharks take steps to address one problem, another one always seems to pop up.The Sharks have spent hours — on the ice and in the video room — trying to squeeze some more production out of their often lifeless power play, which had become one of the least effective units in the NHL.The Sharks made strides in that area Tuesday against Florida, but their penalty kill was once again problematic, allowing two goals in what became a 5-3 loss to the Panthers before another sparse mid-week crowd at SAP Center.Tomas Hertl and Luke Kunin scored third-period goals 70 seconds apart, one on a power play and the other on a delayed penalty, to take a 4-3 lead with 12:39 left in regulation time. But a Marc-Edouard Vlasic tripping penalty preceded a Carter Verhaeghe power-play goal with 9:54 left in regulation time. Kevin Stenlund then scored just 63 seconds later at even strength on a shot from the point as the Panthers took...Thomas, Sobel spark Sacred Heart over Holy Cross 84-77

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren appeared trying to avoid creating competition. The much-anticipated first regular-season meeting between two of the NBA’s top rookies Tuesday night wasn’t much of a game, and apparently there isn’t much of a rivalry between the slender 7-footers. Wembanyama said he wasn’t aware he was even being compared to Holmgren.“Every prospect is compared to everyone,” the 19-year-old from France said. They rarely matched up 1-on-1 on Tuesday, and both had off nights. It’s inevitable in a Cricket World Cup semifinal between Australia and South Africa that the tied contest in 1999 dominates attention. For the victors, as captain Pat Cummins said Wednesday, “It’s part of Australian cricket folklore.” For South Africa, it was another part of a long run of cricket heartbreak.Australia clinched a spot in the ‘99 final, and went on to easily beat Pakistan at Lord’s for the title, after a mix-up between South Africans Lance Klusener and Allan Donald resulted in a last-over runout that ended the Proteas’ tournament.“You see the replays,” Cummins said on the eve of the semifinal in Kolkata, when asked about the impact of that game on his current squad, “but obviously none of us were playing the game.”The South Africans have consigned that result to history, and make the point that some players in their squad weren’t even born when it happened.Still, the aggressive South Africa lineup is aiming to shrug off the tag of cho...Latest news
