Brexit cliff-edge has electric carmakers spooked as talks falter

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:33:23 GMT

LONDON — British trade chief Kemi Badenoch is ramping up pressure on the EU to save electric vehicle manufacturers on both sides of the channel from being hit by new Brexit trade rules in 2024.But Brussels’ top diplomat in London, Pedro Serrano, is telling people privately it may be difficult to avoid the coming post-Brexit cliff-edge this year, a visitor who recently met the ambassador told POLITICO.It’s already too late for manufacturers such as Nissan, Ford and Stellantis. They are planning how many electric cars and trucks to make in the second half of the year to sell cross-channel.The new rules, set out in the U.K.-EU trade agreement, ratchet up on January 1, 2024, and will slap a 10 percent tax on new electric vehicles if a majority of key parts, such as batteries, aren’t made in either Britain or the EU. Most EV batteries are supplied by China.Britain and the EU are holding negotiations over the issue, after carmakers on both sides warned recently that the new rules will ser...

Finland’s economy minister resigns after Nazi references

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:33:23 GMT

Finland’s economy minister, Vilhelm Junnila, has been forced to resign after making comments about Nazis.Junnila, a member of the right-wing populist Finns Party, came under fire in Finnish media for attending a far-right event in 2019, which has links to neo-Nazis.He also made jokes about Nazism — by referring to the number 88, which is used as a far-right symbol for “Heil Hitler” because H is the eighth letter of the Alphabet.Junnila’s resignation comes after only 10 days in office and after slimly surviving a no-confidence vote. He apologised and stepped down on Friday. “I condemn holocaust, antisemitism and all antisemitic acts completely,” he said on Twitter on June 22. The Finns Party, which came second in April elections, became part of a government coalition earlier this month, under prime minister Petteri Orpo.

The Supreme Court rejects Biden’s plan to wipe away $400 billion in student loan debt

By MARK SHERMAN (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — A sharply divided Supreme Court on Friday effectively killed President Joe Biden’s $400 billion plan to cancel or reduce federal student loan debts for millions of Americans. The 6-3 decision, with conservative justices in the majority, said the Biden administration overstepped its authority with the plan, and it leaves borrowers on the hook for repayments that are expected to resume in the fall.Biden was to announce a new set of actions to protect student loan borrowers later Friday, said a White House official. The official was not authorized to speak publicly ahead of Biden’s expected statement on the case and spoke on condition of anonymity. The court held that the administration needed Congress’ endorsement before undertaking so costly a program. The majority rejected arguments that a bipartisan 2003 law dealing with national emergencies, known as the HEROES Act, gave Biden the power he claimed.“Six...

New driver’s license law takes effect Saturday: Here’s where to apply and what to know

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:33:23 GMT

Massachusetts residents without lawful proof of presence in the United States can start to seek out driver’s licenses Saturday, but they will have to wait until the Registry of Motor Vehicles reopens on Monday to show up for appointments. The law enforcement-backed law has been hailed by supporters as a way to make sure all drivers are insured and road safety is taught to all motorists. It survived a veto from former Gov. Charlie Baker and a failed Republican-led campaign to overturn the law after it was solidified by the state Legislature.Starting Saturday, those who are in the United States without legal status — people whose visas have expired or who crossed the border illegally, among others — can obtain a standard, five-year Massachusetts driver’s license if they can provide at least two documents proving their identity and date of birth. The head of the Registry of Motor Vehicles has stressed on multiple occasions that people need to schedule an appointment before showing up to ...

Maine governor vetoes proposal sought by tribes to ensure they benefit from federal laws

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Democratic Gov. Janet Mills delivered a setback to Native American tribes in Maine seeking greater sovereignty on Friday, vetoing a proposal aimed at ensuring most federal laws apply to them despite a state land claims settlement that dates back to the 1980s.The governor said she does not want the tribes in Maine to be unfairly excluded from federal benefits enjoyed by other tribes across the country. But she argued that the bill sponsored by Democratic House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross is vague and confusing — and will lead to protracted litigation. The veto may not be the final word. Both the Maine House and Senate approved the bill with bipartisan majorities big enough to override the governor’s veto.“I believe the interest we share to do right by the Wabanaki Nations and Maine people must be accomplished through legislation that is clear, thoroughly vetted, and well understood by all parties,” she said. The Wabanaki tribes are the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Mi...

Europe’s border agency seeks answers from Greece on alleged illegal deportations of migrants

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The European Union’s border agency is seeking “clarifications and information” from Greece’s coast guard on two alleged cases of migrants who crossed by boat being illegally deported back to Turkey, a European official said Friday. The official said Frontex’s executive director Hans Leijtens wrote to a senior police official representing Greece on the Frontex management board, requesting a reply by July 10. The agency helps patrol EU member Greece’s eastern borders.Greece’s center-right government has in recent years stepped up patrols in the eastern Aegean Sea, radically reducing the numbers of migrants from the Middle East and Africa crossing in small boats from neighboring Turkey. But Athens has been repeatedly accused of dumping migrants who enter Greek waters back inside Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction without allowing them to apply for asylum — an illegal practice known as “pushbacks.” There have been similar claims on Greece&#...

Brazil court votes to bar Bolsonaro from elections until 2030

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:33:23 GMT

SAO PAULO (AP) — A panel of judges voted Friday to render far-right former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ineligible to run for office again after concluding that he abused his power and cast unfounded doubts on the country’s electronic voting system. The decision, once voting of all judges concludes, will forbid Bolsonaro from running until 2030, upending the 68-year-old’s political future and likely erasing any chance for him to regain power.Four of the seven judges on the nation’s highest electoral court agreed that Bolsonaro abused his authority by using government communication channels to promote his campaign and sowing doubts about the vote.“This decision will end Bolsonaro’s chances of being president again, and he knows it,” said Carlos Melo, a political science professor at Insper University in Sao Paulo. “After this, he will try to stay out of jail, elect some of his allies to keep his political capital, but it is very unlikely he will ever return to the pr...

Iowa governor’s request for federal aid in partial building collapse denied

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:33:23 GMT

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The federal government denied Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ request for assistance after a six-story apartment building partially collapsed roughly one month ago, leaving three dead, many injured and dozens displaced.A federal agency “determined that the severity of the situation does not warrant an emergency declaration that provides supplemental federal emergency assistance,” according to a June 28 letter that Reynolds posted on social media.Reynolds issued an emergency proclamation the day after the Davenport, Iowa, building’s partial collapse to deploy state resources to the response. She sent a formal request for a federal emergency declaration the following week, estimating the response to be at least $5 million and asserting it was “beyond the capability of the State and the affected local governments.”Reynolds said a second request is still pending.More than three weeks after the west wall of the building crumbled, most of the remaining str...
